FiTONIC Athlete of the Week: Larysa Reed, Cross-Fit Competitor

This week we are high-fiving FiTONIC's Athlete of the Week: Cross-Fit competitor, Larysa Reed!!  Larysa is a military mom who has found a home within the Cross-Fit community. This week, she encourages us to "make the time" for fitness and shares the importance of finding community!

Hi! Tell us a little about yourself and your fitness journey!

I am a wife, a mom of two boys, and currently serving in the Air force.  

I started Crossfit in 2016. I didn't like the state that I was in physically. Being a stay at home mom was taking a toll on me. I was looking to change my lifestyle and to be more fitness oriented. The workouts turned into a great mental break from the kids. After my first class, I fell in love with Crossfit. I loved the intensity, the camaraderie, and the fact that everyone pushed each other to do better. Since then, I have competed in two competitions.

I love the fact that there's always a Crossfit box, even outside of the US, to work out in. I went to Germany for two weeks and found a gym right outside of the base. They welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family. When I leave for military duties, you can normally find me at the nearest gym working on accessory work to get stronger in areas that need more focus.

What do you believe to be your greatest strength and weakness?

My greatest strength is my resolve to continue. There are so many things that have happened in my life where I was tempted to quit but I overcome it by making myself get up and go. My weakness is Knoppers. When I was in Germany I found a new snack...and I'm completely addicted.

What is the hardest part about what you do?

Time, there is always something that comes up pulling you away from your goals. Dedicating the time and putting in the work is the greatest challenge but also the only path to success.

What is the most rewarding?

Every time I walk out of the gym or finish a race I feel accomplished. I leave feeling amazing and healthy knowing I'm growing stronger physically and mentally.

What is your nutrition like? Any tips?

I am not on a strict diet, but I routinely eat fresh, healthy foods. Honestly, I work out and exercise so I can also enjoy those awesome cheat meals like pizza or the occasional donut...or three.

After my workouts, I drink a protein shake and when I get the chance I add whey to my smoothies for an extra boost.

Do you have any words of encouragement for women who are just beginning their fitness journey?

It's never too late to start. The best time to exercise is when you least want to. That's when you'll get the most satisfaction out of your workout.

Make the time. Whether its 10 min or an hour, there is always something you can do. Make it your lifestyle. Find a gym family, people who can hold you accountable and give that push you need to get better.

Looking forward to the future, who do you WANNABE?

I want to be inspirational to moms and to those who think they do not have the time. I want a better me than yesterday. There is a better life out there, a healthy life.
