HEATHER/ CALIFORNIA/ CUSTOM WOOD ARTIST/ YOGA
This week we are high-fiving FiTONIC’s Athlete Spotlight: Heather Wood! Heather loves to add a variety of workouts to her routine to keep things interesting and fun! She talks to us about the importance of consistency and being grateful for our health. We love her nutrition tips, the reason her husband is her favorite coach, and her current fitness goal! Big High five to Heather!
What is your fave way to train (running, yoga, CrossFit, weightlifting, dancing…)?
I love to mix it up! I regularly practice yoga and love to mix in kickboxing and Body Pump classes, as well as the occasional run. I also have the great privilege to live near a beautiful redwood state park in the Santa Cruz mountains, so I love to hike on the weekends as well.
How did that become your thing?
I get bored easily and will quickly fall off track of my health fitness goals if I stick with just one activity, so I know to set myself up with as much variety as possible each week.
How has training physically changed you mentally or emotionally?
Life always feels like a bit of a roller coaster, and I have learned over the years I feel best mentally and strongest emotionally when I prioritize exercise. The benefits of exercise on the brain are amazing; I just have to remind myself of it sometimes when I feel I’ve lost motivation!
What is still hard for you about your training, fitness or nutrition?
Definitely maintaining consistency. It is so easy to lose momentum for many reasons in this modern, non-stop world we live in, and I tend to beat myself up for it when I’ve fallen short of taking the best care of myself. I find it difficult to set my healthy intentions based on the love and care I have for myself rather than the shame I feel from not being perfect. It’s something I have to consistently focus on, and change my mentality.
What is the mantra in your head that you hear most often when you train?
I always remind myself how good I’ll feel afterward - it’s all about those endorphins!
What do you love most about your body?
Honestly, my body has been so steady, reliable, and strong despite the fact I haven’t always given it the best care. I’m so grateful to have been blessed with good health, and it’s something I’m learning as I age to never take for granted. All the money and time in the world can’t buy you good health once it’s lost.
If you have worked with a coach, what’s the most important lesson you learned from that person?
My husband is like a coach to me! He’s always been an athlete competing at a high level - a state champ wrestler, a collegiate runner, cage fighter, and now professional mountain biker. Despite working full time, a high-stress job in an emergency room, he’s still an incredibly strong and competitive athlete which is awe inspiring to me. Every single day he is supportive of me and my health journey even though it looks very different from his, and I value his support, advice, and mindset more than anyone else’s.
What is your fave nutrition tip? Or if you have tried a FiTONIC product, how do you use it in your day?
I love to pre-make individual smoothie bags with spinach, bananas, and berries and keep them in the freezer. It’s so easy to start the day right, full of antioxidants by throwing it in the blender with coconut water and the FiTONIC protein or collagen supplement.
If you could tell only one thing to every woman who is struggling in her fitness journey, what would that be?
Surround yourself with good, hard-working people and find your motivation from loving yourself rather than judging yourself or feeling shame for not being some impossible standard of perfection or beauty.
What goal are you going to crush next??
I’m doing a 10K with all of my girlfriends in March and my husband has already made myself and my BFF a running plan so we’ll be ready to crush it!
BIG thank you to Heather for being our FiTONIC’s Athlete Spotlight!
